A naming convention is the agreed pattern for what events and attributes are called in a customer data platform, and it is decided before tracking is built. It covers the case, the separator, the order of words, and whether a name describes the action or the object it happened to.

In practice
This is the cheapest decision in an implementation and the most expensive one to change. Every segment, campaign, and report built afterward refers to these names, so renaming an event later means finding everything that reads it. Two conventions running in one account is the common outcome of an implementation that changed hands partway through, and it shows up as two events that mean the same thing and a number that is always slightly wrong.
