A variant ID is the identifier for a specific purchasable version of a product, such as a particular size and color, as distinct from the parent product ID.

Also known as
product variant ID
It matters wherever an action has to reference the exact item bought or added to cart. Shopify cart permalinks, for example, need variant IDs, not product IDs, which is why an abandoned-cart link built from the wrong ID lands on an empty or incorrect cart.
In practice
Before building any cart or catalog logic, confirm whether your event data carries the product ID or the variant ID, because they are not interchangeable, and the difference can fail silently, producing links and recommendations that look right but resolve incorrectly.
