An abandoned cart is a session where a customer adds items to a cart but does not complete the purchase within a defined window.

Also known as
cart abandonment
It is one of the highest-intent signals in ecommerce: the customer chose specific products and stopped short of buying. That intent is what makes recovery messaging effective, and what makes accurate cart tracking worth getting right.
In practice
Define the abandonment window deliberately and make sure the cart contents and identity are captured, or the recovery message cannot be built. The signal is valuable only if it reliably reaches a system that can act on it, which is the job of an abandoned cart flow.
