Agent memory is any mechanism that lets an AI agent carry information between sessions or steps, since the model itself forgets everything once a call ends.

AI memory; long-term memory; session memory
Short-term memory is the context window; long-term memory is a store the agent reads from and writes to, such as notes, a database, or a customer profile. What the agent remembers about a customer is data about that customer, with the same consent and retention rules.
In practice
Decide where the memory lives before the agent runs. If it writes to a profile, that profile is now partly machine-authored, and someone has to be able to see and correct what it wrote.
