Anonymization

Anonymization removes identifiers so that an individual cannot reasonably be re-identified from the data.

Also known as

anonymisation

True anonymization is harder than it sounds; combining a few anonymized fields can re-identify people. When anonymization is truly irreversible, the data may fall outside the scope of privacy law, though where that line sits varies by jurisdiction and regulator.

In practice

Be skeptical of anything labeled anonymous that still supports one-to-one targeting. If you can reach the individual, it is not anonymous.
