Pseudonymization

Pseudonymization replaces direct identifiers with artificial IDs, so records can be processed without directly exposing the person's identity.

Also known as

pseudonymisation

It is common in clean rooms and privacy-safe analytics. The link back to the person still exists and is held separately, so it is not the same as anonymization.

In practice

Pseudonymized data is not anonymous data. If the mapping back to identity exists anywhere, the data is still personal and still regulated.
