A segment is a defined group of customers who share criteria, such as recent buyers, lapsed subscribers, or high-value customers, used for targeting and analysis.

Segmentation is one of the core jobs of a CDP: turning raw profiles into audiences you can act on. Segments can be static (a fixed list) or dynamic (membership updates as data changes), and dynamic segments are what make real-time targeting possible.

In practice

Prefer dynamic segments defined by rules over static exported lists, which go stale the moment they are built. And keep each segment’s definition documented, because a segment namedengagedmeans nothing until someone can see the rule behind it.
